Recently, I met up with former professor to improve my resume. Here are my main 2 take aways:
1. DON’T SHOW THAT YOU ARE A STUDENT- Let me rephrase, don’t make you being a student all that you are. Employers will see that you are a student under the ‘Education’ section of the resume. Show off what you have done, learned and acquired. Show that you know your stuff, even as a student.
2. YOUR SUMMARY ANSWERS WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU’VE DONE AND YOUR VALUES-
Before, my summary was just about how I will perform in the work environment, what I had learned from previous experiences and what I will deliver if given the opportunity. Now that I have rewritten my summary, I feel more confident because writing it this way shows more of who I am. In addition, answering those answers alone makes a great paragraph for the ‘about’ section here on LinkedIn. However, the summary on each resume should be tweaked to cater the specific job based on the qualifications they are looking for. So hate to break it to you, 1 resume is not a one size fits all.
When I was writing my resume I thought it would be an easy task. In reality, it required a lot of thinking and rephrasing. If you are feeling discouraged, you are not alone. To my fellow college students out there, I hope these tips help. Here’s to our success! 🙌
