Just like you, any viral trend that claims to work on TikTok is worth being skeptical for.
The first time I heard of the "Sleepy Girl Mocktail" was months ago. I saw handfuls of videos of influencers making the drink. But it seems like they were making a concaution of juices and powders, like as if they were making a mermaid potion.
I was a skeptic when I first saw this because TikTok always seems to convince people to get on a useless trend to waste even more time it alreay has. However, I have done some reaserch and to my surprise, the science checks out.
What is a Sleepy Girl Mocktail? Essentially, it is a drink that contains supplements to help improve sleep. It recipe calls for cherry juice, magnesium powder, and some sort of carbonated beverage such as sparking water.
The Science behind the mocktail: According to Healthline, magnesium regulates "several neurotransmitters involved in sleep, such as gamma aminobutyric acid." People take magnesium as a supplement pill, however it is available for purchase in powder form which is perfect to add into a drink.
Tart or 100% cherry juice contains natral meletonin, which is a coumpound found in the juice that causes you to fall asleep when consumed. Your body produces the hormone naturally, it being at the highest level at night. However, people suffering from sleep disorders and insomnia may find relief in consuming meletonin in a supplement form (Healthline).
Main takeaway: Cherry juice and magnesium= better sleep, scientifically. I am going to have to try this for myself to really say it works. The science behind it seems to confirm its claims, and I trust science. Not only the combination improves sleep, my further research on Healthline revealed that the drink my have further health benefits of strengthening the immune system and reducing anxiety.
It is best to do your own research before trying out some random trend you see on the internet. But the Sleepy Girl Mocktail seems to be promising.
